Scotland is undergoing one of its periodic political upheavals. In the 1970s it was the breakthrough of nationalism, in the 1980s it was the resistance to Thatcherism and the battle to overcome the so-called democratic deficit which left Scotland governed by a political party rejected by the electorate. And then came the 1990s and the establishment of the devolved Scottish Parliament.

Most observers would agree that all these events will one day soon be seen as milestones on the road to Scottish independence. Naturally, these are busy times for political writers of all shades of opinion. We offer a few new titles for anyone wish to learn about Scottish politics and the advantages of independence.

The Independence Book

The Independence Book: Scotland in today's world
- by Harry Reid and Paul Henderson Scott

If you believe in the case for Independence, this book will provide you with a stirring endorsement of your view. If you are sceptical, it might well persuade you to convert to the cause. If you are downright hostile, this book could be dangerous - it could prompt you to rethink.

The faultlines concern whether independence will set the struggle for reform and socialism backwards or forwards.

Drawing on the latest research, Devine places Scotland firmly within an international context and provides a key focus for the ongoing debate regarding Scotland's future. This new edition brings the reader up-to-date with Scotland's recent history, from the high politics of the devolved parliament to the everyday effects of huge and growing levels of social inequality.

Grasping the Thistle
- Dennis MacLeod and Michael Russell

What’s wrong with Scotland? Why are we in the doldrums while other small nations prosper? In the most radical book about Scotland for a generation, authors Dennis MacLeod and Michael Russell look at their country from an international perspective, and chart a new way forward. In a post-oil era they show why Scotland needs to return power to the people in a completely new kind of democracy and they back up their analysis with hard facts.
